The axles of semitrailers, trailers and trawls, which are used to transport fairly heavy and bulky goods, are the most vulnerable structural elements.

If the semi-trailer carries about 60-70 tons of cargo, then each pair of wheels should withstand about 10 tons.

It is important to understand that at the time of arrival of heavy self-propelled equipment onto a trawl, the load on individual axles increases to 20-30 tons.

Transportation of goods is often carried out in difficult road conditions, so problems such as axle ruptures, cracks in the steel base, broken threaded joints, deformation of structural elements are not uncommon.
The axis may lose its ideal geometry, which may result in:

  • loss of stability on the highway;
  • wagging the semi-trailer;
  • tearing to a flat path;
  • knocks and rattle when cornering and bumps;
  • loss of directional longitudinal stability.

For maintenance and repair today the most modern methods are used. Specialists must perform a visual inspection of the structure for visible damage and malfunctions, and then perform a complete diagnosis and testing at special stands.
Wheel pairs are completely disassembled and reassembled with the replacement of worn or damaged elements, electric welding is performed, and turning works are performed.

After all the procedures, reassembly and testing in operating modes are performed.

It is necessary to take into account the place of the defect and the nature of the damage, after which such overhaul procedures for the axles are performed, such as:

  • restoration of seats for bearings and other hub components;
  • elimination of cracks, chips, fractures of metal by welding;
  • restoration of brackets and places of their fastening;
  • restoration of bearing journals;
  • production and installation of new pins;
  • restoration of the hub mechanism;
  • restoration or replacement of washers and springs;
  • restoration of pivot elements;
  • beam maintenance and so on.

All welding works are carried out with subsequent quality control of the seam using an ultrasonic flaw detector. The final alignment of the axes is made on special stands for adjustment and testing.

Please note that when overhauling axles, it is often necessary to perform maintenance on the components and mechanisms closest to them: brake drums, steering levers, shock absorbers, and so on may require replacement and repair.
